Lawrence Eischen, Jr., the son of Margaret (George) and John Eischen, Sr., was born on August 14, 1922, on the family farm in Rock Township near Maryhill, Iowa. He was the youngest of 10 children. He attended country school, and then graduated from Cherokee Public High School in 1939.
He was united in marriage to Josephine Meier on November 21, 1944, in Bow Valley, Nebraska. They made their home near Meriden, Iowa, where they farmed and raised their four children: Janice, Jerome, Jerald, and Jeffrey.
Farming was John's passion--he especially loved raising livestock. He spent some time working for the Cherokee Livestock Sales, as well as Quaker Oats and Fredricksen Grain in Meriden. He was an avid fisherman, at times taking trips to Minnesota and Canada. He had been a 4-H leader for many years, and served on the Cleghorn Library Board. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church where he sang in the choir, and at many funerals.
In 2006, when his health began to fail, John was lovingly cared for by the staff at Careage Hills Nursing Home in Cherokee. He passed away there on March 23, 2012, at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Josephine on November 8, 2001; two sisters, Kathryn (Laurence) Kohns and Helen Eischen; seven brothers and their wives, Carl (Marie), Sylvester (Edna), George (Harriet), Clarence (Beryl), Edward (Dorothy), Harry (Celestine), and Freeman (Bernice).
He is survived by his children: Janice of Cincinnati, OH, Jerome of Cherokee, IA, Jerry of Spencer, IA, and Jeffery (Reg'ee Harris) of Omaha, NE; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
