Jesse E. Schlichting

July 2, 1926 — December 27, 2016

Jesse Eugene 'The Whistler' Schlichting, was born July 2, 1926, to Nina Jane (Brees) and Lawrence Henry Schlichting. He grew up on a farm between Sutherland and Gaza, Iowa, and attended school in Gaza. He served in the U.S. Army, and earned his GED during his military service. Jesse married Dorothy Irvine on February 11, 1944. The couple was blessed with four children, Nina, Larry, Dennis and Patrick. Dorothy died in 1972, following a battle with breast cancer. In 1973, he married Fran. They enjoyed 29 years together until Fran's passing in 2002. He then married Lois Schlichting, who preceded him in death in 2015. Jesse ran a delivery route for Old Home Bread in the Iowa Great Lakes area for four years. He spent many years in the meat locker business, having owned and operated plants in Sutherland and Cherokee prior to building a new plant, 'Jesse's Fine Meats', in Cherokee. After retiring from the locker business, he owned and managed the Hilltop Village Trailer Court on the edge of Cherokee. Jesse was a kind-hearted soul, blessing so many with his happy whistling. His faith was very important to him, and his heart for children prompted him to donate land for a preschool where children could learn about Jesus. He volunteered at the preschool--praying for, and loving on the children. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing and mowing the grass. He also liked playing cards and visiting with people. Jesse passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, December 27, 2016, at age 90. He was preceded in death by his parents; three wives; a sister, Annis and her husband, Don Simpson; a brother, C.W. 'Chub' Schlichting and his wife, Harriet; a brother-in-law, Ned Hill. Left to cherish his memory are his children: Nina (Terry) Dorr of Cleghorn, IA, Larry Schlichting of Cherokee, Dennis 'Red' (Linda) Schlichting of Medford, OR, and Pat Schlichting (Mary Corcoran) of Delta Junction, AK; his grandchildren: Chelle (Dan) Dannenbring of Freeman, SD, Tammy Roepke of Smithland, IA, Nikki (Joe) Kardouni of Medfield, MA, Dan Schlichting of Eldridge, IA, Andy (Jodi) Schlichting of Cherokee, Marcia (Eric) Colvert of Bend OR, Jeff (Heidi) Schlichting of Boise, IA, Ginny (Will) Redmond, Sally Schlichting and Jesse Schlichting, all of Fairbanks, AK; 11 great grandchildren; 2 step-great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; one sister, Mary Hill of Manteca, CA.
