Jerome "Jerry" Delaine Martin, a cherished figure in the community and an inspiring educator and coach, passed away peacefully at his home Marcus, Iowa on August 18, 2024, at the age of 89. Jerry was born on January 5, 1935, in Forbes, North Dakota, amidst the idyllic rolling hills and prairies that would shape his early years. He grew up in a large family, being one of five brothers and two sisters.
From a young age, Jerry demonstrated a strong work ethic, spending his summers working as a hired hand for local ranches. He engaged in the demanding chores of gathering eggs, milking cows, and feeding livestock, all while excelling academically as he was the valedictorian of his high school class. His athletic prowess also shone brightly during these formative years as he was heavily involved in various sports.
In the fall of 1953, Jerry embarked on a new chapter in his life when he boarded a train to Le Mars, Iowa, to attend Westmar College. Jerry graduated in 1957, with his teaching degree ready to make a lasting impact in the world of education and athletics. In 1958, his teaching and coaching career began in Anthon, Iowa. He quickly garnered attention for his exceptional ability to motivate and lead young athletes. It was also there that he met his future wife Barbara Beeson in the classroom. He later earned his Masters Degree from Colorado State University.
In 1961, Jerry united in marriage with Barbara Beeson, and together they were blessed with two sons, Todd and Kent. In 1965 the family moved to Marcus, where Jerry took a job teaching Biology, Athletic Director, coaching cross country, and girls' basketball. Over his storied coaching career from 1958 to 1991, Jerry became a legendary figure in local sports, ultimately coaching girls 6 on 6 basketball over 761 games with an impressive record of 538 wins and 223 losses. His teams won numerous Little Sioux and War Eagle Conference Championships. At the time of his retirement, he ranked 11th in the state for total career victories, a testament to his dedication and skill. Jerry's achievements earned him a place in the Iowa Coaches Hall of Fame and recognition through many regional awards.
Beyond the scoreboard, Jerry was known for his unwavering integrity, honesty, humility, and fairness in all his endeavors. He inspired countless students and athletes, leaving a legacy that extends far beyond his school career.
