James Howard Anderson was born July 18, 1930, at the family home in rural Cherokee County, Iowa, to Axel and Bessie (Enockson) Anderson. He graduated from Larrabee High School in 1947, and lived his entire life on the same farm just west of Larrabee. From 1952-53, Jim served in the Korean War, reaching the rank of Sergeant 1st Class. He received a Bronze Star Medal, as well as other leadership awards during his time of service.
He then started farming with his dad and brother. Jim loved the farm and raising Black Angus cattle. He showed cattle and won many blue ribbons at numerous cattle shows, including Chicago, Denver and the Cherokee County Fair. He loved all sports and played basketball and baseball when he was in high school, and on several town teams. He enjoyed watching both the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones play football and basketball.
In 1957, Jim married Mary Ann Ogren, and they were blessed with three sons, Galen, Greg, and Alan, and later, six grandchildren. He was a lifetime member of the Oakdale Evangelical Free Church. He loved his God and Church, his friends and family.
Jim passed away at Country Side Estates in Cherokee, IA, on Tuesday, May 3, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, Axel and Bessie Anderson; one brother, Neal Anderson, in 2004; two brothers-in-law, Arnold Ogren and Anthony Costa; three sisters-in-law, Shirlee Ryan, Arlene Kimball, and Carole Grauer; Mary Ann's parents, Fritz and Ethel Ogren.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 59 years, Mary Ann; his sons, Galen and wife, Kate and their children Jimmie and Luke of Gresham, OR, Greg and wife, Daryl and their children Hanna, Julia, Tommy and Tyler of West Des Moines, IA, and Alan and special friend Angie Clark and her daughter, Gina, also of West Des Moines, IA; a sister, Eleanor Costa of Aventura, FL; sister-in-law, Alice Anderson of Cherokee; brother-in-law, Sherald Grauer of Cherokee; sister-in-law, Yvonne (Sis) Ogren of Mount Airy, MD; sister-in-law, Linda Kardy of York, PA; brother-in-law, Robert Ogren of Liberty, MO; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 6, 2016, at Oakdale Evangelical Free Church in rural Meriden, IA.
