Irene Elizabeth Bortscheller, the daughter of Fred and Matilda (Wilberding) Rupp, was born May 18, 1916, in Cherokee, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent near Maryhill where she attended Visitation School. She graduated from Immaculate Conception Catholic High School. She then attended junior college in Cherokee for two years where she earned her associates degree. She worked for the ASC office for four years.
On September 2, 1940, Irene was united in marriage to Claude H. Bortscheller at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, IA. Following their marriage they lived in the Oyens area where they farmed until moving to Marcus where they farmed until their retirement in 1981.
Irene was an active member of the Holy Name Catholic Church. Faith was a major part of Irene's life and it was evident with the values and beliefs she passed on to her children. Irene and Claude's first priority was their family. She enjoyed being a homemaker where she cooked, cleaned, and cared for their 9 children.
On July 25, 2014, Irene passed away at the Heartland Care Center in Marcus at the age of 98. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Claude Bortscheller in 2006; and siblings; Leo, Walt, Don, Fred, Laura, Eleanor, Marie.
She will be lovingly remembered by her nine children: Doug and his wife, Sharon of Burnsville, MN, Winnie Vourvoulias and her husband, George of Green Lake, WI, Tom and his wife, Kathy of Granville, IA, Philip and his wife, Judith of Shorewood, MN, Ann Guntzel and her husband, Tim of Golden Valley, MN, Mike and his wife, Deb of Sioux Falls, SD, Nora Beelner and her husband, Pat of Boulder, CO, Joan Harte and her husband, Buck of Brandon, SD, and Lisa Tibbetts and her husband, Ed of Davenport, IA; 28 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; one brother, Leroy Rupp and his wife Bonnie of Cherokee, IA; three sisters, Mary O'Leary and husband, John of Storm Lake, IA, Shirley Sims and her husband Rudy of Schaller, IA, Norma Clark of Cherokee, IA; one sister-in-law, Joan Rupp of Sioux City, IA; and many nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at the Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus.
