Helen Alvina (Steichen) Glassmaker was born on the family farm near Alton, Iowa on May 8, 1922, the daughter of Nicholas and Mary (Henricy) Steichen. She attended St. Mary's School in Alton.
In 1943, Helen met Raymond Glassmaker at the Avalon Ballroom in Remsen. They were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, Iowa on May 2, 1944, and were married for 64 years. They settled on the family farm south of Cleghorn, Iowa, where they lived their entire married life.
Helen passed away on Sunday, November 3, 2013, at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center, at the age of 91. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, beloved daughter, Mary, two brothers, Arnie and Art, and three sisters, Bert, Marion and Catherine.
Helen's greatest accomplishment was raising her large family. Her children and grandchildren fondly remember her homemade bread, pies and other goodies. She had a strong and deep faith. She was a member of Maryhill Visitation Parish until its destruction in 2006.
She is survived by her 13 children and their families: Phyllis (Bob) Walton of King City, CA, Diane (Doug) Henke of Washta, IA, Tom Glassmaker of Cleghorn, Bill (Violet) Glassmaker of Cherokee, Joe (Pat) Glassmaker and Bob (Sherrill) Glassmaker of Marcus, IA, Joan Nicolai of Cleghorn, Michelle (Rich) Moret of South Sioux City, NE, Janet (Mike) Kruse of Sioux City, IA, Dave (Michelle) Glassmaker of Cherokee, Pete Glassmaker of South Sioux City, NE, Chris (Jaime) Wankum of North Sioux City, SD, and Liz (Marc) Mallory of South Sioux City, NE; 26 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; a brother, Francis and four sisters, Rose, Betty, Patty and JoAnne; many other relatives and friends.

10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee.
