Harry Lester Brutsman, the son of Harry and Gertrude Brutsman was born July 26, 1921, in Delaware County, Iowa. His childhood years were spent near Delhi, IA where he received his education. He graduated from Maquoketa Valley High School in Delhi.
Following his education, Harry served in the United States Army where he was a male nurse on a Navy ship and worked as a cook. On December 6, 1947, Harry was united in marriage to Geraldine Sunderlin in Delhi, IA. Harry worked at the Mental Health Institute in Independence, IA. His job brought him to Cherokee, IA in 1957, where he worked at the Cherokee MHI. In 1962, he went to work for the Cherokee Parks Department where he later became park custodian until his retirement in 1986.
Harry enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his wife and family.
On December 14, 2011, St. Peter opened his gates for him to come home at the age of 90. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Gertrude Brutsman; 5 sisters: Ruby Miles, Dorothy House, Leota Dettbarn, Esther Ruddleston, and Doris Hines; and one brother, Louie Brutsman.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years, Geraldine Brutsman of Cherokee, IA; one son, Harry Jr. and his wife Nancy Brutsman of Cherokee, IA; and one step-grandson and his family, Kim and Cristy Meyer and their children, Kayla and Kemra of Dakota City, IA; as well as several nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee.
