Harold Arthur Larson, the son of Carl and Inez (Coombs) Larson, was born July 2, 1928, in Aurelia, IA. Harold’s childhood years were spent in Aurelia, where he attended school. Harold was always interested in athletics and earned 12 letters in high school before heading off to the Iowa State Teachers’ College, where he played baseball. After graduating in 1950 with a BA in physical education and minors in history and math, Harold started his teaching career at Sutherland, Iowa High School as a math teacher and coach. Harold later joined the US Army, and after leaving the service in 1956, he started a 36-year career as a math teacher, basketball coach, and golf coach at Washington High School in Cherokee, Iowa until his retirement in 1992.
In November of 1951, Harold was united in marriage to Aileen Schneider. They were blessed with seven children. During retirement, Harold enjoyed playing golf and was an active member of the Cherokee Country Club. He also volunteered with the Knights of Columbus and Meals on Wheels. Nothing made him happier than spending time with family cheering on the Iowa State Cyclones and Minnesota Twins.
On Monday, October 4, 2021, Harold passed away at Accura Care Center in Aurelia, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Oscar and Inez Pearl (Coombs) Larson; sister, Carole Bistline; brother, Dale Larson; brothers-in-law, Lew Bistline and Tom Yates; sister-in-law, Lucille Larson; daughter, Joy Larson; and son, Douglas Larson.
He will lovingly be remembered by his wife of 70 years, Aileen Mae (Schneider) Larson of Cherokee, IA; children, Dr. David (Diane) Larson of Ankeny, IA, daughter-in-law, Ginny Larson of St. Louis, MO, Mike (Kathy) Larson of Dublin, OH, Nancy (Charley) Jensen of Leawood, KS, Karl Larson of Cherokee, IA, and Dan (Jodi) Larson of Ankeny, IA; grandchildren: Carrie James, Stephanie Timm (Matt), Angie Larson, Katie Larson, Erika Larson, Tom Jensen (Lauren), Ben Jensen, Leigh Ann Griffin, Caleb Larson; great-grandchildren, Colton Timm, Westin Timm and Nancy Jane Jensen; sister, Corrine Yates of Indio, CA. Harold was our dear husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend to many.
