Gretchen Emily (Wieland) Mummert, the daughter of George and Pauline (Stutz) Wieland was born in Aurelia, IA, on August 24, 1927. She received her early education in the Aurelia schools, graduating from Aurelia High School in 1945. Following graduation, she worked as a secretary for the Whitney Elevator, and later at the Otis Radio Shop and Waltmar Beauty Shop.
She was united in marriage to Dean Mummert on June 14, 1947 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. They became the parents of four children, Larry, Paula, Tom and Duane. Gretchen loved to cook. She enjoyed being outdoors, whether it was working in her flower beds, watching the wildlife, or fishing. Spending time with her family and friends was very special to her.
Gretchen passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee, IA, at the age of 87. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Keith Wieland and a sister, Janet Kolpin.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Dean; four children: Larry (Beth) Mummert of Delta, CO, Dick (Paula) Benson of Cherokee, Thomas (Lynette) Mummert of Larrabee, IA, and Duane (Patty Peterson) Mummert of Cherokee; 11 grandchildren: Wade, Mark (Amy), Mary (Ken), Stacey, Dean, Brian (Laura), Krista (Rod), Mike (Linda), Breanne, Aaron and Haley; 13 great-grandchildren: McKenna, Mya, Hope, Victoria, Olivia, Dillon, Ashton, Simon, Hanna, Adam, Jacob, Gemma and Allyssa; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
