Glen ‘Bud’ Allen Downer was born December 24, 1948 on a farm northeast of Sutherland on a hill that overlooks the Bible camp. He lived there with his mother Bessie, his grandparents Harvey and Pearl, and his uncle Wally until the age of 4 years. At that time they moved to Calumet, where he lived the rest of his life. Bud went to Calumet Community Schools graduating in 1967 in one of the last classes. Bud graduated from trade school in Omaha with a degree in automotive repair. After working as a mechanic and other jobs, Bud worked as a machinist at Eaton’s in Spencer until he retired in 2013.
Bud was quick with a smile, always had time to talk and never failed to lend a helping hand. His first love was anything related to guns. He would drive through 3 states to attend a gun show. Fondest family memories of him are the many family gatherings he loved to attend, adventure filled camping excursions and staging a practical joke. He loved family traditions and family history. We will miss his humor and presence.
Bud was preceded in death by his mother Bessie. He is survived by his cousins Roger (Kary) Gopperton, Robert (Frieda) Gopperton, Brenda (Gary) Oliphant and Norma Hoke. The 3 Musketeers also cherish his memory – Dave Gopperton, Dan (Amy) Gopperton and Janet (Steve) Alingh, as well as many other family and friends.
