Franklin Allen Herwig, the son of Wayne Sr. and Charlotte (Long) Herwig, was born June 18, 1953, in Cherokee, IA. His childhood years were spent in Paullina where he attended school and graduated from Paullina High School in 1971. He then attended NW Community College in Sheldon where he received a degree in accounting.
Frank moved to Cherokee and began a 38 year career working as a Resident Treatment Worker at the Cherokee MHI until his retirement in December of 2017.
Frank enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, and spending time outdoors. He loved to take long country road drives in search of pop cans. He was an avid sports fan, especially cheering on the New York Yankees, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Boston Celtics. He played cards and cribbage, and had an obsession with mowing lawns. He liked caring for his cats and dogs but most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends.
On July 21, 2020, Frank passed away at Unity Point Hospital in Sioux City at the age of 67, he was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Charlotte Herwig; granddaughter, Angel;; the mother of his children and biggest supporter, Lori Ashley; brothers, Wayne Herwig, Jr. and Steven Herwig; and brothers-in-law, Larry Wenck and Gary Wenck.
He will be lovingly remembered by his children; Clay (Heather) Ashley of Moville, IA, Doug (Kendra) Ashley of Ruthven, IA, David (Amanda) Herwig of Early, IA, Casey Herwig of Cherokee, IA, and Rebecca (Devin) Brooks of Manchester, IA; grandchildren, Cole and Everett Ashley, and Summer and Callie Wendt; one sister, Carol Herwig (George Morgan) of Washington, DC; also other relatives and many friends.
