Francis L. Wendt, the son of Leo and Marie (Alesch) Wendt, was born on the family farm between Marcus and Remsen, IA, on December 12, 1936. He graduated from Holy Name Catholic School in Marcus. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Hanno on August 13, 1960.
Fran was a farmer his whole life. He was born and raised, and raised his own family on the family's Century Farm. He loved to be outdoors, whether it was for work or for play. He was an avid hunter, and loved boating and camping with his family. His love for hunting led to his serving on the Cherokee County Conservation Board, teaching gun safety courses for youth, and being an active member of the Le Mars Sportsman's Club. He also enjoyed singing tenor with a Barber Shop Quartet. He was a member of the Marcus Snowbirds Snowmobile Club and the Knights of Columbus.
Following a brief illness, Fran passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at the Heartland Care Center in Marcus. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Marie; his wife, Phyllis; a brother, Bill Wendt and sister, Mary Hagedorn; his son-in-law, Pat Conway; and a nephew, Paul Wendt.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Mary Conway of Sioux City, IA, and Bob and his wife, LaRae Wendt of Marcus, IA; four grandchildren, Bridget and Mathew Macziewski of Sioux City, IA, Emily and Chris Daugaard of Sioux Falls, SD, James and Stephanie Conway of Vermillion, SD, and Nathan Wendt of Marcus, IA; three great-grandchildren, Kyan, Kendall and Evelyn Macziewski; a sister, Devera Broderick and her husband, Roger of Pacific Palisades, CA; his friend and longtime companion, Janice Plendl of Remsen and her family; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
