Eugene George Thill, the son of Michael and Theresa (Mergen) Thill, was born on August 18, 1934, in Whittemore, IA. His childhood years were spent in Whittemore where he attended school and graduated from Presentation Academy High School in 1952. He served in the United States Air Force from 1954-1958 in Intelligence stationed in Germany.
On June 17, 1961, Gene was united in marriage to Eleanor Waters at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. They lived in various locations over the 42 years spent with JC Penney; Cherokee, IA, Carroll, IA Bloomington, IL, La Salle, IL, Pekin, IL, Brazil, IN, Carmel, IN, Geneva, IL, and Spencer, IA.
Gene was an active member of Spencer, serving on the Spencer Chamber of Commerce, Spencer Area Association of Business and Industry, Spencer Main Street Board Member, Spencer Airport Board Member, Spencer Rotary, and was a volunteer for the Clay County Fair. He was chairman of the Spencer Flag Fest Committee and Chairman of the Christmas Decorations Committee in 1985 and 1986. In 1985, he was awarded the Jack Wedel Memorial Award for outstanding volunteer of the year.
On December 12, 2020, Gene passed away at John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit, MO, at the age of 86. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Eleanor Thill; brothers, Melvin and Don Thill; and one sister, Arlene Peterson.
He will lovingly be remembered by his children; Joan (Frank) Tampone of Asbury, NJ, Julie (Lou) Ambrose of Mendham, NJ, Dan (Kathy) Thill of Westminster, CO, Jane Thill of Lee’s Summit, MO, Jeanine Thill of Lee’s Summit, MO, and Janiece Thill of Roseville, MN; grandchildren, Joseph, Courtney, and Nicole Tampone, and Jessica, Michael, and Matthew Thill
