Following high school, Ellen worked in the office at Wilson Foods and The Cherokee Daily Times beforestarting a position at Drugtown (HyVee Pharmacy) in Cherokee. It was there that Ellen found great satisfaction assisting the customers. She made many life-long friends during her time at the pharmacy. Many were drawn to her, in part, due to her wonderful sense of humor and joking ways. She enjoyed spending time in her garden, and loved cooking. She was famous for her lasagna, potato salad and taco ring. Ellen’s greatest joy in life was her son John, his wife Missy, and their children Mya and Dominic, who all held a special place in her heart. She moved next door to her mother, and dedicated herself to being a caretaker during Margaret’s last days. The two became “quite the pair”, and Ellen thoroughly enjoyed that special time with her mom.
Ellen passed from this life on Sunday, February 18, 2018, at Unity Point St. Luke’s in Sioux City. She was 66. Preceding her in death were her parents, Emmett and Margaret Holton.
Those left to cherish her memory are: her son John and Missy Briggs, Mya and Dominic of Cherokee; her brothers: Denny (Cherie) Holton of Cherokee, IA, Mike (Jill) Holton of Alta, IA, Tim (Lora) Holton of Dakota Dunes, SD, Terry (Kerry) Holton of Overland Park, KS, and Steven (Joyce) Holton of Plano, TX; a special aunt, Darlene (Ron) Schmillen of Marcus; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 21st at Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee.
