It must have been a glorious April 30, 1921 in Cherokee, Iowa, the day Frank and Anna welcomed their youngest son, Edward John, into the world on Butterhill Farm, which would be his home until retirement. He grew up near Visitation Maryhill Church, which was his cornerstone, offering educational, religious and spiritual guidance his entire life.
Ed and Arlyce (Schmillen) were married on October 10, 1950. The union lasted 41 years until Arlyce's death in 1991, producing five children.
Farming was Ed's first love, raising cattle, hogs and chickens, along with having many loving dogs.
Pheasants Forever, The Depot Restoration Society, Friends of Conservation were the organizations Ed was most involved in. Cooking (especially chili cook-offs) fishing, woodworking, bake sales, and playing Tripoly were among many of his interests. The St. Louis Cardinals were his greatest passion.
He approached life with 'Witty-Fun', a sparkling personality, and a genuine zest for life. Creative and colorful, Ed never knew a stranger.
Ed passed away peacefully at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center on Sunday, December 28, 2014, at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank in 1960, mother, Anna in 1980, his wife Arlyce in 1991, and a brother, Charles in infancy.
