Edna Arleen Swanson was born on a farm near Larrabee, Iowa, on January 6, 1918, the daughter of John and Lottie (Hill) Covell. She attended school in Larrabee until the 6th grade, when hard times forced her to leave her studies to help on the family farm. The family relocated to a farm near Aurelia, and Edna continued to work hard in the fields and help care for the livestock.
On February 23, 1950 she married Arvid C. Swanson. Following Arvid's discharge from the service during WWII, the couple became actively engaged in managing the family farm. In addition to being a busy farmwife and mother, Edna enjoyed tending her garden--especially her favorite, '4 o'clock' flowers.
Arvid passed away in 1990,and with the help of her family, Edna remained on the farm. She enjoyed taking rides around the area, and eating at McDonald's and Danny's. She was a big fan of watching her grandson race cars at Alta. During the last two years of her life, she made her home at Sunset Knoll in Aurelia. She was loved and cared for by the staff, and had the reputation for being a 'cheery' and 'cute little lady'. She loved dancing and listening to Big Band music. She was especially fond of the Eddie Skeets Band and the 'Blue Skirts Waltz'.
Edna passed away at Sunset Knoll on February 14, 2015, at age 97. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and siblings, Jesse and Nettie.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Rick and his wife, Terri Swanson of Storm Lake, Iowa, and daughter Cleo and her husband, Bruce Spence of Sioux City, Iowa; five grandchildren: Mark Hill, Jackie (Bill) Slack, Greg (Kristina) Swanson, Rachel Swanson and Missy Swanson; five great-grandchildren: Christopher, Megan, Steven, Brian and Alexander; a great-great-granddaughter, Emma; one sister, Violet Aldred of Cherokee; other relatives and friends.
