Dean Edward Mummert, the son of Harry and Ruth (Gifford) Mummert was born September 1, 1924, in Cherokee, IA. His childhood years were spent in Cherokee where he attended school. After his education, Dean served with the 513th Parachute Infantry, 17th Airborne Division from December 23, 1943 until his honorable discharge on June 29, 1945. He received the following medals; Purple Heart, European African Middle Eastern, Good Conduct, and Acting Squad Leader of European Theatre of Battle of The Bulge Operations.
On June 14, 1947, Dean was united in marriage to Gretchen Wieland at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, IA. They were blessed with four children; Larry, Paula, Tom, and Duane. Dean worked for Iowa Public Service Company for 36 years until his retirement in 1981.
Dean enjoyed anything connected with wildlife, fishing, woodworking, and reminiscing of years past. Most of all he loved the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. Dean was a volunteer fireman with the Cherokee Fire Department for many years. He also served as a Boy Scout Leader, and served with the Little Sioux Wildlife. One of Dean’s favorite experiences was when he got to be a member of the Honor Flight Crew where he toured Washington D.C.
On Monday, February 7, 2022, Dean passed away at Accura Healthcare in Cherokee at the age of 97. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gretchen Mummert on April 1, 2015; his parents, Harry and Ruth Mummert; and siblings, Gerald, Donald, Jim, Richard, Rita, Jack, Philip, and Lyle.
He will be remembered by his four children; Larry (Beth) Mummert of Delta, CO, Paula (Dick) Benson of Cherokee, IA, Thomas (Lynette) Mummert of Larrabee, IA; and Duane (Patty Peterson) Mummert of Cherokee, IA; grandchildren, Wade, Dean Stacey, Mark (Amy), Mary (Ken), Brian (Laura), Krista (Rod), Mike (Linda), Breanne (Kevin), Aaron (Jillian) ,Haley, and Jordan (Justin); great-grandchildren, Abby, Allyssa, Jacob, Gemma, River, Ryker, Dillon, Ashton, Hope, Victoria, Olivia, Adam, Simon, Hanna, Grayson, Remington, McKenna, Mya, and Paisley; great-great-grandchildren: Luca, Ariel, and Owyn,; and special friends, Danny Speelman, and Kathy Ryan; and many special nieces and nephews.
