Dawn Sonksen, the daughter of Glen and Phyllis (Wilkinson) Parker, was born August 27, 1943, in Cherokee, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Cherokee where she attended school. She was united in marriage to Ronald Shaefer. Dawn was later united in marriage to Roger Sonksen on November 27, 1961 in Cherokee In 1971, the family moved to an acreage by Larrabee, IA. They resided there for many years before moving back to Cherokee in 2012. . Dawn worked as a homemaker raising her children. She also worked as a waitress for many years and had most recently worked security for Wells Fargo before retiring in 2009.
Dawn was an avid reader and enjoyed studying the Bible. She also liked to watch birds, crochet, and bake. She was known to make the best pumpkin bars according to her grandchildren. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
On Friday, May 18, 2019, Dawn passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center at the age of 75. She was preceded in Death by her husband, Roger Sonksen; parents, Glen and Phyllis Parker; one brother, Tom Parker; and two sisters, Glenda Johnson and Bonnie Jean Parker.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Gary (Sherry) Shaefer of Cherokee, IA, Dean (Sherri) Sonksen of Montana, and Nick (Shawna) Sonksen of Sioux City, IA; 12 grandchildren: Amber, Autumn, Shanon, Richie, Shayla, Matthew, Camron, Matt, Brittany, Brady, Skylar, Raegan; five great-grandchildren; several nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.
