David K. Bofenkamp was born December 18, 1943 in Sac City Iowa, the son of Joseph Anthony and Pearl Viola (Nelson). He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. The family moved to Cherokee in 1954. He graduated from Immaculate Conception HS in 1963. He then served in the Army from 1964 to 1968, three of those years being stationed in Germany near the Czech border.
He returned to Cherokee where he met his future bride. He married Donna Erickson in Alta in 1970. He worked for the Department of Transportation for 32 years as an inspector, retiring in 2002. There are numerous roads and bridges throughout Iowa that he would tell you he helped construct. Over the years he enjoyed bowling, playing cards, wood working, daily coffee outings and cheering on his daughters and then grandchildren in their many activities. He also loved to cheer on the Hawkeyes and Steelers. His kids and grandkids were his pride and joy. He loved to put his spin on things and his sly grin and sense of humor will long be remembered by all who knew him.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 50 years, Donna, his daughters Jodi (Matt) Mongan of Cherokee and Julie (Curt Stuart) of San Antonio, TX. Three grandchildren Carson, Kylie and Kenna Mongan. Brothers Al (Mary) of Cherokee, Jerry (LoAnn) of Fowlerville, MI and sister Carma (Dale) Peck of Peterson, IA. Also, many nephews, nieces, extended relatives, friends and coffee pals.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his in-laws Marlyn and Betty (Galvin) Erickson; an infant brother, Robert; brother Don; brother Art and sister-in-law Bev; sister Jean and brother-in-law Ward Allen and also other nephews, aunts and uncles.
