Daniel L. Smith

Daniel L. "Bear" Smith, the son of Leland and Catherine (Curtis) Smith, was born December 24, 1957, in Cherokee, IA. He was raised on a farm near Quimby and attended school in the Quimby and Washta School districts. On May 27, 1978, Dan was united in marriage to Kathy Brodersen at Immaculate Conception Church in Cherokee, IA. Dan drove a cement truck for Russell Ready Mix for many years. He then hauled groceries for Hy-Vee for a while and then hauled gravel. In his spare time Dan liked to spend time with family and friends. He enjoyed picking on his little buddies and making them cry. On February 18, 2010, Dan passed away at Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee, IA, at the age of 52. He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Bud Brodersen; and brother-in-law, Glen Haselhoff. He is survived by his wife of almost 32 years, Kat Smith of Quimby; son, Jamie and special friend Faith Morgan; sister Cathy Smith and her fianc� Bill Stover of Quimby, IA; mother-in-law, Della Brodersen of Cherokee, IA; sister and brothers-in-law: Betty Haselhoff and Ben Brodersen both of Cherokee, IA, Bob and Georgia Brodersen of Paullina, IA; nieces and nephews: Katie Haselhoff of Sioux Fall, SD, Leia and Jim Kruger of Milford, IA, Jason and Tonya Haselhoff of Cicero, IN, Jeff and Susan Haselfoff of St. Joseph, MO, Jay and Mandy Brodersen of Sioux City, IA; great-nieces and nephews: Alex, Isabel, Mackenzie, Dylan, Chris, and T.J.; his adoptive son: Jerry Flewelling and wife Amber of Quimby, IA; adoptive family: Karman, Lars, Billie, Hunter, Ryder, Matt, Cassandra, Miles, Jessee, Joe Dirt, Luke, Twinky, Nicole, Rachel, Liz, Billy, Coy, Kenny, and Jackie; special little buddies: Colby, Corbyn, Anthony, Clarese, Taylor, Lana, and Jacob; as well as the family pet, baby kitty; and all his truck driving buddies.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in the spring, at the Quimby United Methodist Church, in Quimby, IA
