Dale LeRoy Newell, the son of William and Norma (Behl) Newell, was born April 19, 1946, in Lemon, SD. During his childhood years his family lived in various communities in South Dakota and Minnesota. He attended and graduated from Mountain Lake High School in Mountain Lake, MN. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served four years in the military until his honorable discharge. Dale lived in Sioux City, IA where he was a over the road truck driver.
On August 11, 1973, Dale was united in marriage to Maredith “Chris” Christie at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee, IA. They lived in Cherokee for a short time before moving to Meriden, IA. They started their own trucking company and Dale drove truck for many years until his retirement. Following the passing of his wife, Chris on March 9, 2010, Dale was united in marriage on January 11, 2020, to Sonja DeRaad at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They made their home in Meriden.
Dale loved attending Sprint car races. He also enjoyed listening to 50’s and 60’s music, traveling, watching football, and going on river boat rides on the Mississippi. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
On Friday, January 27, 2023, Dale passed away unexpectedly at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee, IA, at the age of 76. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Chris Newell; parents, William and Norma Newell; one daughter, Tammy Trout; and one brother, Larry Newell.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Sonja Newell of Meriden, IA; siblings, Marjorie (Gene) Gregg of Carson City, NV, David (Mary) Newell of Primghar, IA, and Dwain (Kari) Newell of Lakefield, MN; daughter, Holly Leusch of Dallas, TX; brother-in-law, Alan (Nikki) Pulscher of Sioux Falls, SD; and several nieces and nephews.

Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home - Cherokee
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at the Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee. Pastor Jane Johnston will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date in the spring.
