Cheryl Schmidt

February 13, 1937 — July 28, 2013

Cheryl Jean (Schultz) (Drefke) Schmidt, the daughter of Ray and Alice (Frazier) Schultz, was born on February 13, 1937 and raised on a farm near Peterson, IA. She graduated from Peterson High School. She married Larry Drefke, and was blessed with five children, Mark, Marilyn, Mike, Merry and Mitchell. The couple later divorced. On August 20, 1988, she married Melburn Schmidt. They made their home in Cherokee. Through the years, Cheryl worked at A&W Root Beer, Central Trust & Savings Bank, Dr. Kennedy, and Hy-Vee Bakery. She also helped Mel in his interior decorating business. She enjoyed sewing and cross-stitch, watching sporting events, cooking and spending time with her family. Following a brief illness, Cheryl passed away at the Careage Hills Nursing Home in Cherokee, IA on Sunday, July 28, 2013, at age 76. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Richard Schultz and Robert Schultz, a sister, Beverly Shurman, and a son-in-law, Randy Peterson. Left to cherish her memory is her husband Mel; her children and their families: Mark (Susan) Drefke of Sutherland, IA, Marilyn (Mike) Zembsch of Phoenix, AZ, Mike (Sandy) Drefke, Merry Peterson, and Mitchell (Kasonda) Drefke, all of Cherokee; 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.
SERVICES
Services for Cheryl will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 1st, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 230 N. Roosevelt Ave. in Cherokee.

VISITATION
Visitation will be at Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee beginning at 12 noon on Wednesday, July 31st. The family will be present from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m.

INTERMENT
Burial will be at a later date.
