Cheryl Kathleen Sears Steele Small Salter, the daughter of Sam and Jean (Houser) Sears, was born June 16, 1949, in Cherokee, Iowa. Cheryl graduated from Washington High School in 1967 and attended Bible College in Minneapolis, MN for one year.
She married Timothy P. Steele of Sutherland in 1968 and they moved to east Tennessee where they lived for four years. They later divorced. Cheryl returned to Iowa and obtained employment at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute. She met Ronald D. Small while living in Peterson and they were married April 24, 1976 at the First Church of Christ. After the birth of their first daughter, Veronica on November 19, 1979, they family moved to Cherokee. They were blessed with a second daughter Audrey Lynne on June 12, 1983. Cheryl worked at CMHI for 37 years, retiring in 2010.
She attended Iowa Lakes Community College where she obtained an Associate Arts Degree. The family attended the First Church of Christ where Cheri served as Sunday School Superintendent, taught several Sunday School classed and was a worship leader She was a member of the Homemaker’s Circle and was on the prayer team and mission committee.
The family traveled to the Black Hills, Wyoming, 29 Palms, CA, Paris Island, New York City, and Kingston Canada. Ron was diagnosed with Melanoma in 2000. He won his battle with cancer May 1, 2002 and went to his eternal home. Eventually Cheryl and Danny went on their first date July 18, 2006. On December 29, 2006, Cheryl married Danny Salter from Hartley, IA. The next year Cheryl and Danny participated in the weddings of two of their children, Micah and Amy (Hoffert) Salter and Audrey (Small) and Jesse Page. Also the wedding of two grandsons in Reedsport, Oregon, Keith and Amy Frost and Kent and Joelle Frost.
Cheryl was an avid reader with a large collection of books (the goal was 1,000) with several first editions. She also enjoyed quilting, crocheting, and puzzles of all kinds. Cheryl and Danny enjoyed traveling. They had been from coast to coast. They toured Great Britain, Ireland, and Scotland. In Ireland Cheryl sang an Irish balad with a group in a pub. There have been numerous trips to Oregon, and Idaho to visit children. Cheryl mostly enjoyed having a house full of people to cook for. The usual cry was “there’s another pan of lasagna over here.”
Cheryl was proceeded in death by her husband, Ron Small in 2002; aunt Joyce House in 2001; her mother in 2004; her father , Sam Sears and his wife Gladys; in-laws, Bud and Ruth Small; sisters-in-law, and Shirley Salter, Jackie Berg, and Duane and Marge Salter.
She will lovingly be remembered by her husband, Danny Salter; four children, Anna (Salter) Dean Fost, Micah (Amy) Salter, Veronica (Small) Eric Plowman, and Audrey (Small) Jesse Page; nine grandchildren, Keith and Kent Frost, Ben (Salter) Chrisman, Gage and Reid Salter, Melanie and Steven Plowman, Piper and Liam Page; three great-grandchildren, Riley, Eirick, and Harbor Frost; Cheryl’s half sisters, Sandy (Charles) Loscheider and Nancy Bohlman; The families of Gary Small of Spencer, Dale Small and many relatives on both sides; and dear friends, Elaine French and Claudia Flores.
