Beverly Bonnie (Bryant) Orthmann was born on her family farm near Sutherland, Iowa, on September 29, 1927 to Clair and Amy (Nelson) Bryant. She attended the local schools and graduated from Sutherland High School in 1945. While still in school, she caught the eye of friend and classmate, Kenneth Orthmann, and the two were married June 18, 1948. They began farming in Clara City, Minnesota, but eventually made their way back to Sutherland to farm and raise their family. She graduated from St Joseph’s Nursing School in Sioux City, Iowa. During her career she passionately cared for the residents and patients of Baum Harmon Hospital in Primghar and Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn.
Beverly and Ken retired and moved to town in 1986, although those who knew her would never describe her as ‘retired’. A lifelong member of the Sutherland United Methodist Church, she was deeply dedicated to serving the Lord and her church. Through the years she served as Sunday school teacher, MYF leader, state and local UMW leader, and any committee that needed her oversight and commitment. She led and hosted Bible studies in her home with many area women as well. She enjoyed various other activities including gardening, antiquing, family genealogy, and watching her favorite ball teams - the Packers, the Cubs and any team Iowa fielded!!
Beverly finished her earthly journey on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at her home in Sutherland. Welcoming her to Heaven are her parents, Clair and Amy Bryant; brother, Lee Bryant and sister, Darlene Tharp; daughter-in-law, Deborah Orthmann; and in-laws, Dee Dee Bryant, Robert Tharp, Robert Engel and Robert Orthmann.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 70 years, Kenneth Orthmann; her children: Joel (Andrea) Orthmann of Marcus, IA, LeeAnn (Dave) Bigler of Lakeville, MN, Randall (Lydia) Orthmann of Peterson, IA, and David Orthmann of Sutherland; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; many dear nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
To her family and close friends, Beverly will long be remembered and treasured for her devoted prayer and abiding love for us. She will be profoundly missed. Memorial contributions in her name will be directed toward organizations near and dear to her heart, including the Prairie Heritage Center and the N.B. Baker Library.
