Betty Joan Stoneking, the daughter of Franklin and B. Arlyne (Wiese) Hargens, was born November 23, 1934, in Holstein, IA. She was baptized on June 23, 1935 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. Her childhood years were spent in Cushing. She attended country school and later Cushing Consolidated School where she graduated in 1953.

Betty was united in marriage to Kenneth Stoneking on May 18, 1955 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cushing. Following their marriage, they lived in Germany for 18 months while Ken was stationed in the military. They returned to the United States and made their home in Cushing. Betty worked as a homemaker and helped raise their three children. In 1975, she started work as a kitchen staff member at Eastwood School. After her retirement, she went to work in the dietary department at Good Samaritan in Holstein, IA.

Betty was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cushing, where she was confirmed on March 21, 1948. Betty enjoyed crafts, painting, and listening to Mollie B polka music. She loved to travel and always looked forward to the family vacation always the first week of August every year. She liked tending to her flower garden, tending to her yard, and often mowed lawns for others. Betty also enjoyed playing cards and board games with her grandchildren. She followed and cheered on the Minnesota Twins. Most of all, she enjoyed the times spent with her family and friends.
