Barbara Ann Brewer

Barbara Ann Brewer, the daughter of Clarence and Viola (Jungers) Schemmel was born October 9, 1937, in Granville, IA. Her childhood years were spent on the farm near Remsen where she attended school. Her family later moved to town and she graduated from St. Mary's High School. Following high school, Barb attended and graduated from beauty and cosmetology school in Sioux City, IA. Barb was united in marriage to Raymond Brewer in 1961. They were blessed with six children. Barb worked as a hairdresser for many years in Cherokee. She fixed hair at Countryside Estates and the Cherokee Villa. She loved her job and the many close friends she made over the years. Barb was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Faith and family were the two most important things in her life. Barb raised and nurtured her six children primarily on her own for many years. Barb had many hobbies which included her favorite, playing cards. She was known to play on numerous card clubs sometimes playing up to four times a week. She also enjoyed going to plays and movies, and loved butter popcorn. She also spent time in her garden, attending to her many flowers, and was the best homemade pie maker around. Most of all she enjoyed the time with her family and friends. On September 15, 2016, Barb passed away at Accura Health Care Center in Cherokee at the age of 78. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Viola Schemmel; one grandson, Andrew Hargrave; and one brother, Robert Schemmel. She will be lovingly remembered by her children: David (Cheryl) Brewer of Cherokee, IA, Diana Brewer of Cherokee, IA, James (Sue) Brewer of Cary, NC, Lisa (Tom) Hargrave of Spencer, IA, Harry (Caryn) Brewer of Prairie Village, KS, and Karen (David) Pace of Blue Spring, MO; two brothers, Mel (Martha) Schemmel of Oxford, IA, and Clem (Joyce) Schemmel of Sumner, IA; one sister-in-law, Norma Schemmel of Storm Lake, IA; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
