Arlis A. Bechtel

Arlis Arlean (Arndt) Bechtel, the daughter of Clarence and Lottie (Morvez) Arndt, was born March 31, 1930, on a farm near Canby, MN. She graduated from Canby High School in 1948. Following graduation, Arlis and three of her girlfriends moved to Cherokee, IA to find work and further their education. Her first job was working at the State Hospital. She then began working as a switch operator for Northwestern Bell. While working in Cherokee, Arlis met a handsome young man named Loren Bechtel. The two were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA on November 7, 1953. Their family soon grew to include three children, Steve, Bob and Lisa. Arlis was a very good bowler, and at one time, had great fun being part of a bowling team for Perrin's Fur Farm. She also excelled at golfing, and enjoyed ballroom dancing and gardening, as well as sewing, crocheting and knitting. She was an excellent cook. A spotless house and immaculate appearance were very important to Arlis. She maintained close relationships with many of her girlfriends through the years, and she loved their Friday night dinners on the town. Arlis passed away under Hospice care at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center on Monday, February 15, 2016, at the age of 85. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Loren in 2008; two sisters, Velma Norris and Nona Cole; a brother-in-law, Merle Cole, and sister-in-law, Deloris Arndt. Left to cherish her memory are her three children: Steve Bechtel, Bob Bechtel, and Lisa (Barry) Carlson, all of Cherokee; eight grandchildren: Stephanie Bechtel, Chad Bechtel, Alyssa Bechtel, Jessica (Bechtel) Pipal, Carl Bechtel, Lynn Carlson, Jodi (Carlson) Thomas, and Brandon Carlson; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Elroy Arndt of Minnesota, and Gene (Faye) Arndt of Louisiana; other relatives and friends. Arlis' family would like to thank the staff and residents at the Gardens Assisted Living for the love, friendship and excellent care given to her during the past four years.
