Alice Jeanette Zimmer, the daughter of Robert and Emily (Tschill) Meylor, was born February 23, 1928, in Plymouth County, IA. Her childhood years were spent in Marcus, IA, where she attended school and graduated from Holy Name Parochial High School, in Marcus, IA.
On August 12, 1947, she was united in marriage to Darreld Zimmer at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. Following their marriage, Darrel enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. They lived in Seattle, WA, and Oklahoma until his honorable discharge. They moved back to Iowa, where they farmed at Maryhill for five years. In the early 1950’s, they moved to Storm Lake, IA, and Alice worked for Northwestern Bell for many years until her retirement. In 1979, they move to Mission, TX. Alice volunteered her time at her local hospital where she worked many hours assisting anywhere she was needed. In 2016, she moved back to Cherokee, IA, to be closer to her family.
Alice was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed sports, most notably tennis, golf, NASCAR, and baseball. She also liked to crochet, work on crafts, tatting, and tending to her cats and dogs. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family. Even though Alice never had children of her own, there were many nieces and nephews that were dear to her.
On Saturday, February 4, 2023, Alice passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Emily Meylor; husband, Darreld Zimmer; siblings, Marie Brech, Robert Meylor, and Bonnie Schmillen; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Schroeder.
She will be lovingly remembered by her sister, Teresa Westcott; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
