Alfred E. Jensen

May 10, 1923 — April 22, 2013

Alfred Emilius Jensen, the son of Danish immigrants, Jens and Gerda (Magnussen) Jensen, was born in Hartley, IA on May 10, 1923. His early childhood years were spent mainly in the Sutherland, IA area. He graduated from Sutherland High School in 1941. He proudly served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 - 1945. On June 24, 1949, he was united in marriage to Betty Fogelman. They raised their family in Sutherland. Al worked at several jobs over the years, including the Sutherland Cooperative Elevator, owned & operated Al's Champlin Station in Sutherland, worked at H & N Service Station in Paullina, and retired from the O'Brien County Road Maintenance Dept. in 1983. He like to call himself a 'Jack of all trades-master of none', when in reality, he could fix almost anything. In his earlier days he was a member of Sutherland's semi-pro football team. He later enjoyed golfing and fishing, and the two belonged to both dance and card club. He was a life-long member of the Sutherland United Methodist Church. After living in Sutherland for most of their married life, Al and Betty moved to Paullina, IA in 2001, and then to The Manor in Sanborn, IA in late 2012. On April 3, 2013, they became residents at Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn. He passed away there on April 22, 2013, at age 89. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Sherri and her husband Tom Nelson, grandson Todd Nelson, Great-grandson Damen Dau, and four sisters, Else, Verna, Ulla and Sonja. Left to cherish his memory is Betty, his wife of 63 years; their children, Julie (Dennis) Dau of Granville, IA, Dale (Janelle) Jensen of Independence, MO, Andrea (Joel) Orthmann of Marcus, IA, and Jim (Dawn) Jensen of Sutherland; 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; a sister, Doris Jensen of Largo, FL and 2 brothers, John (Helen) Jensen of Spirit Lake, IA and Paul Jensen of Sutherland; in-laws Burdette and Faith Fogelman of Webb, IA; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
