Steven Richard Casey

October 8, 1952 - January 20, 2020
From: Cherokee, IA

Steven Richard Casey, the son of Freeman and Hilda (Torbensen) Casey was born on October 8, 1952, at Moorhead, IA. At an early age, his family moved to Cherokee where he attended school and Graduated from Washington High School in 1971. While there, Steve was a member of the Cherokee Young Singers led by Gary Leatherman. He also excelled in track. He ran the high and low hurdles and broke many school records. His senior year he won the state title in the high and low hurdles at both the indoor and outdoor meets. After high school, Steve attended UNI and ran track placing 5th in the nation at the Junior Olympics in the high hurdles. His love of the hurdles was passed down to his children as they all ran hurdles at state.

On March 1, 1975, Steve was united in marriage to Susan Clark at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cherokee, IA. He worked at R.J. Thomas Manufacturing and later Lane Moore Lumber Company. He then went to work for the City of Cherokee for over 30 years in the waste water department until his retirement in 2015. Following his retirement, he worked part-time for Peoples Service in Sanborn, worked as a sportscaster with John O’Connor at KCHE, drove cars for Rasmussen Ford, and was a hazmat employee for the Cherokee Landfill. Steve also volunteered for the 2010 U.S. Census and was a timer for the Tomahawk Relays where he was named honorary referee.

Steve loved to travel and spent every anniversary with Sue in Hawaii. He enjoyed going to the Drake Relays, listening to Blues music, and watching high school sports. Most of all, he cherished the time spent with his family and friends.

On Monday, January 20, 2020, Steve passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center with his family by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, Freeman and Hilda Casey; and his father and mother-in-law Vernon and Fern Clark.

He will lovingly be remembered by his wife, Sue Casey of Cherokee, IA; his children, Nicholas (Trisha) Casey of Emmetsburg, IA, Trisha (Michael) Gordon of Berthoud, CO, Dustin Casey of Cherokee, IA, and Derek Casey of Des Moines, IA; eight grandchildren, Ella Casey, Rylee Casey, Korbin Casey, Kenadee Gordon, Pieper Gordon, Brodie Gordon, McCaelyn Casey, and Mack Casey; brothers, Douglas (Gloria) Casey of Manson, IA, Mark (Marcia) Casey of Cherokee, IA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim (Sandy) Siegel of Cherokee, IA, Dale (Rochelle) Waggoner of Spencer, IA, and Jon (Cheryl) Winterboer of Peterson, IA; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

“I just heard of Steve's passing. I ran track with Steve at Washington High School. We were often 1-2 in the high hurdles my Senior year in 1970. Steve was always number one in the low hurdles. In retrospect, I believe he could have beat me anytime in the high hurdles. He would go 14.1 the next year for a school record. My deepest condolences to Steve's family.”

“I met Steve only one time, about 5 or 6 years ago. I was visiting Cherokee and attended the Tomahawk Relays. It was there that I was introduced to Steve. We talked at length about our past Cherokee track days, and accomplishments. I never got to actually see Steve compete, as I was in the Navy during his competing years. From all I've heard and read, Steve was a great track athlete. I'm sure his family is, and forever will be, proud of his accomplishments. He will be missed by many. Rest in peace Steve. . . . . .”

“I was sorry to learn of Steve’s passing. I was a teammate of Steve’s on the great Cherokee track teams in the late ‘60s. Steve was perhaps the best in a long line line of Cherokee hurdlers stretching back to Jock Ogilvy and through Tom Graves and Steve Cady. These guys dominated the hurdles in NW Iowa and in State competitions. Steve was maybe not the last but certainly was one of the best! Beyond that, he was a certifiable CHARACTER! A great guy!

Steve, you have cleared your final hurdle - now take a well-deserved shower!”

“I'm so sorry to hear about Steve. We had some great conversations when we would run into one another. He was also my uncle's baseball coach in the 70s. They lost every game that year but he and the other coach would take all the kids out after each game! Always loved hearing that story. May he be at peace. ”
