Marian Emma (Martin) Gifford, the daughter of Louis and Bertha (Buttemeier) Martin, was born on October 26, 1915, in Manson, IA. She moved with her family to Cherokee, IA, where she attended school, graduating from Wilson High School in 1933. Following graduation, Marian worked for Metropolitan Insurance. On May 2, 1935, she was united in marriage to Dale M. Gifford at the Immaculate Conception Church in Cherokee. They made their home in Cherokee, and Marian lovingly cared for her family. She also worked for J.C. Penny and Simmons' Market Store. Marian enjoyed playing cards, dancing, knitting and babysitting. She often had a large garden and canned much of the produce for her family. She also enjoyed traveling and visiting family. She had been a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and she was a member of the Degree of Honor. She was active in the UTU Auxiliary and the I.C. Ladies Union. Dale and Marian were long-time members of The Depot and the Northwest Iowa Archeological Society, where they received the Keyes-Orr Award for Outstanding Amateur Archeology. Marian was also active in the V.F.W. Auxiliary, Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and the Birthday Card Club. Marian was a longtime volunteer for the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, handling the weekly collections every Sunday for many years. Marian passed away at the age of 96, on Friday, April 13, 2012, at the Countryside Estates in Cherokee, IA. Preceding her in death were her parents, Bertha and Louis J. Martin, her husband, Dale, in 1998, a brother, Meredith Martin, and an infant daughter, Nancy Kay Gifford. Left to cherish her memory are her children and their families: Ron (Karen) Gifford of Indianapolis, IN, Jean Doran of Boone, IA, and Jim (Laura Karr) Gifford of Lebanon, IN; 6 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Kempton of Shelbyville, KY; many other relatives and friends.

“Our condolences to the family of Marian Gifford. She and
Dale were good friends of my parents (Nash's), and I (Helen) also was a member of the Trainmen Ladies Auxiliary with Marian. She was a very nice person, and I'm glad she was a part of my life. You have our sympathy.”

“Hi to all the Gifford's. I am so sorry to hear about Marian. I know it was rough there at the end. I am also so very sorry I will not be able to be at the funeral home wake service or to the funeral itself. We are traveling tonight to pick up Amy's five children and we will be watching them for a week while Amy and Allen are in the Carribean. I stopped in Monday night, just in case I could view, but she was not ready. So sorry. I really wish I could see you all. Take care and please keep in touch. You are dear friends and I do not want to lose that friendship. Love you all.”

“To Marian's Family,
I was a resident of Cherokee for over 25 years and had the pleasure of knowing both your mother and father. I sure you already know this, but it can never be said enough, they both were people to look up to and respect. Your mother had such a heart of gold. I only wish that your mother knew how many people's lives she touched and made better because of her 'Lady' like actions and presences.
What beautiful woman inside and out. Please accept my sincere condolences for your earthly loss of your mother. I know she is one of God's angels, she was here on earth.”

“I would like to express my sympathy to the Gifford family. My grandparents (Bert and Marcia Grawburg) lived next door to the Gifford family on Cherry Street for many years, and my parents (Bill and Melba Grawburg) thought very highly of the Gifford family. Niann, one of my older sisters, is actually the goddaughter of Marian and Dale, so this truly shows the respect and love my parents had for them!”

“I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your mother, and especially sorry thar I can't be there for the visitation and funeral. I am in Texas visiting my daughter this week and won't be home in time. I'll remember Marian as a lovely, gracious lady, and a friend of my mother since they were high school classmates. Please accept my deepest sympathy in your loss, and know that I will be remembering Marian and all of you, her family, in my prayers. Jan McMurrin”
